David Powell, a staff member at Bromley Recovery Works, is taking the plunge this winter to raise funds for BLG Mind.
The Senior Recovery Coordinator is aiming to swim 25km before Christmas as part of Swimathon, the world’s largest annual fundraising swim.
Although lockdown means David hasn’t been able to swim as often as he’d hoped, he has already swum 22km and raised £325 of his £500 target.
David says the challenges of Covid-19 have made this a particularly important time to raise awareness of and funding for mental health issues.
“Referrals have been surging across many services in recent months. The hindrances of lockdown have intensified feelings of isolation for many people. The new terms of engagement for mundane activities such as shopping, care and leisure have given a sense that the walls are closing in and exacerbated perceived threats,” he said.
