Bromley & Lewisham Mind’s Community Support Service in Lewisham has been working with national Mind and the local Lewisham community, to understand the mental and physical health needs of vulnerable migrants and refugees.
Paul Stewart and Thema Peart of the Community Support Service in Lewisham team, worked with the local migrant and refugee community to research and inform a new local Mind manual on engaging migrant communities and mental health service commissioners. The manual and guide will be launched later in 2017.
Mike Munson, Community Support Services Manager said, “Paul and Thema have worked very hard on this project. Their work has resulted in our service being more directly engaged with supporting Lewisham’s sizeable migrant and refugee community which is larger than the London-wide 30% migrant/refugee demographic.”
During Refugee Week (19th – 25th June 2017) Community Support Service in Lewisham will be taking part in the Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network event on Tuesday 20th June 2017. The event will run from 9.30am to 2pm, at the Civic Suite, Lewisham Town Hall, Catford Road, SE6 4RU, and will feature speaker and Labour MP for Lewisham and Deptford, Vicky Foxcroft.
The event will provide:
- an overview of the refugees and asylum seekers’ plight amidst the current economic and political climate;
- discuss changes on the Immigration Act
- raise the public’s awareness on the challenges of claiming asylum including Human Rights claim and having No Recourse to Public Funds
- promote the image of refugees and celebrate their contributions to the community.
