Bromley Recovery College Summer Programme

As with many other institutions, Bromley Recovery College has had to respond to a very different environment. Sadly, this means that for the time being we are unable to offer our traditional classroom-based courses and workshops. We are, however, able to offer a rich variety of alternatives.

Our courses are free and are open to all those who live, work or are registered with a GP in the London Borough of Bromley. At the present time we are also accepting students from neighbouring London boroughs.

Recovery College Open Forum

Open to both colleagues and students alike, this lively discussion group meets weekly. Our aim is to explore the need to respond positively to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 Lockdown. We are all in a very unusual and sometimes uncomfortable place and the path ahead can appear daunting. We can gain much by talking to others. Everyone is welcome to this gentle and informal group.

Healthy Nutritional Tips

During the last few months many of us may have been tempted to eat more and exercise less. This could lead to grazing on things which are not terribly good for us and, as a result, waistlines may have expanded. This ongoing workshop explores the basics of good nutrition, as well as the link between healthy living and good mental and physical health without abandoning all of the pleasures of eating what we enjoy.

Stretch and Reflect

Regular exercise and a balanced diet can help reduce stress and the risk of illness –and can even be fun. This workshop is designed for those who want to know more about what is happening to their body when they begin to improve their flexibility through increased exercise. The sessions are intended for people of all ages – fit or unfit, everyone is welcome. Loose, comfortable clothing is advised.

DIY Massage – improve muscle tone and suppleness

This workshop will provide lifelong, hands-on skills that can be self-administered to relieve tension, promoting wellbeing and self-awareness. The course is delivered by Leonie Lawson, a licensed sports therapist. Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended.

Gentle Walking

Gentle walking groups are now established at venues across Bromley. Currently a group meets on Mondays in the Beckenham area, Wednesdays in central Bromley and Fridays in the Orpington area. The walks are taken at a gentle pace and last for around an hour, depending on the group. Due to social distancing requirements, the groups are limited to a maximum of six people, including the tutor.

The walks are led by Angela Smith, Veronica Hope and Charlie Carpenter.

No special equipment is required, although comfortable clothing, in particular footwear, is recommended together with appropriate rain gear if necessary. Do bring along some food and drink for a socially distanced picnic lunch afterwards.

All walks begin at 10am.

The Recovery College walkers have also established an active and very friendly WhatsApp group. Art Connect

The Art Connect group currently meets via WhatsApp. Under the leadership of course tutor Enda Burca, it has proved very popular, with students exchanging ideas and sharing their work. Enda is a keen art historian who regularly discusses with the group the work of artists drawn from a wide range of schools. Whether an absolute beginner or an experienced artist, you will be equally welcome at this friendly, relaxed group.

The Bromley Recovery College Gardening group

Gardening is a great way of improving our mental and physical wellbeing as well as being great fun. This course, led by professional gardener Heather Collyer, is based at the Sandford Road allotments in central Bromley. It aims to help students young and old alike learn some basic skills while helping to tend an allotment.

Old clothing, boots and waterproofs are recommended. Due to the need for social distancing and the physical limitations of the allotments, the group will be restricted to six people in total including the tutor.

Dates and times are to be confirmed but we hope to begin sessions early in July. As this course is likely to prove popular, early application is advised as students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Introduction to meditation – single session

This is a gentle introduction to meditation, although the more experienced will also find it helpful and interesting. The workshop will include guidance on setting up a suitable space and how to get comfortable, together with instruction on some simple techniques. The sessions will include some guided as well as independent practice together with some information on follow-up resources.

Drop-in Drama

The aim of these workshops is to explore drama and have fun while focusing on a variety of play readings and monologues. We hope to be able to hold some socially distanced sessions in the outside space at the BLG Mind Beckenham Centre in Hayne Road, Beckenham.
